On Wednesday, October 23, 2019 several 7th & 8th Grade students from Elkhart Middle School’s Exploration Class visited the Morton County Senior Living Community in Elkhart.  The students were given a tour, of the establishment by Marcia Swan, Executive Director, as well as a description of the job opportunities available through the facility.   The students heard from several employees about their careers, their training and how they began working for the Senior Living Community.  Before visiting the students researched responsibilities and requirements for many jobs throughout the care unit.  The students were also given some temporary challenges that the elderly might face as in limited mobility, reduced eye site and hearing loss in order for the students to be able to understand the limitations that the aging process gives the body.  After visiting Morton County Senior Living Community some of the students were asked, “What is something that you learned that you didn’t know about Morton County Senior Living Community before the visit to the facility?” Some students’ responses included:  “I didn’t know that the care center had physical therapy,” “I didn’t know that some of the residence played video games,” “I didn’t know that some of the residence could shop online,” and “I didn’t know that we could visit the residence.”  Some students mentioned plans of returning and polishing fingernails, sharing stories, wanting to play video games or showing some of the residence some individual care.  The experience was a great way for students to look beyond their age.
