Mission Statement

I, Dot Leiker, will assist and support students, parents and staff in this district to maximize each student’s unique potential.  Each student should be challenged to their maximum and still insuring their self-worth and dignity.  This can only be done through collaboration and with an innate belief that “it takes a whole village to raise a child.”

I teach special education for grades K-4 and am the special education consultant for Point Rock Academy.  I truly believe every child learns differently.  It is my challenge to find those special unique ways to open children up to be able to learn to their potential and feel good about themselves along the way.  It is my pleasure to facilitate student learning.

Students in special education are identified through an intense evaluation and on the referral of parents and staff.   Students are identified in areas of need.  From these identified needs ‘the team’ develops an Individual Educational Plan.  The team includes:  classroom teacher, principal, other teachers involved in students work, school psychologist, parents and often the student, also.  It is then my duty to make this document be the guiding force for student success and development in those identified areas.

I also work with the third and fourth grade reading program.  Students are instructed in Guided Comprehension through small group instruction.  This program has shown great success in our students.

Two years ago I had the privilege of becoming a Reading Recovery teacher.  I work with identified special education students and non-identified first grade students to help them be the best readers and writers they can be.    This is one program students who need help learning to read should have the opportunity to do.  Mrs. Davidson, Ms. Alexander and Mrs. Boaldin are also Reading Recovery teachers for our district.

Staff:   I am assisted by a team of talented, trained paraprofessionals:

Peggy Cook is new to our system this year and has shown grace, knowledge and patience in helping special needs students.

Lisa Tucker has been in the grade school for more than 5 years and is a leader in working with students and helping them reach their potential.

Education:   I have been teaching special education since 1993 and am an accredited special education teacher, receiving my master’s in special education-behavior disorders from Fort Hays State University in 1996.  My undergraduate education includes:  Associate of Arts:  Dodge City Community College and Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Communications and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Accounting: Saint Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City.

Background:  I was born in Louisville, Kentucky (the most beautiful city in the world, in the best state in the U.S.).  Dodge City Senior High School was where I graduated.  After attending college I taught school, married Tim, and had two wonderful children, Jon and Melissa, who are now married to two wonderful people.  Recently I became grandmother to Damian and Hannah. the finest children in the world, in my opinion.
