5th Grade Takes Local Field Trip

September 03, 2010

The 5th graders traveled to Middle Springs, north of Elkhart near Point of Rocks, on Friday, September 10 to participate in a science field day presented by the Morton and Stevens Co. K-State Research and Extension offices, US Forest Service, Morton Co. Historical Museum, Kansas Wildlife & Parks and the Soil Conservation Office.  Other schools in southwest Kansas such as Hugoton and Rolla participated in the day’s events with us.

The day consisted of several stations of science activities and lessons.  These activities and lessons dealt with the areas of fire, soil, wildlife, ecosystems and Santa Fe Trail history.  Students learned about how fire is a natural process and not all fire is bad.  They also learned the importance of soil and protecting our soil from erosion.  One of the favorite activities of the day was the wildlife center.  At this center, students were allowed to identify several different animal skins and skulls.

The 5th graders had fun and learned a great deal on this local field trip.  A big THANK YOU to all who made the trip possible and especially to our bus drivers Andy and Zach.
