It’s time for an update on what has been happening in 2B and what will be happening in the near future. First, a big thank you goes to my parents for attending parent - teacher conferences. It is always good to meet with you and visit about your child’s progress. Together we can work to give your child the best education possible.

Also, many thanks to those parents who provided treats, and favors for our Valentine’s Day party. They helped to make the party a huge success for the students.

March 4th will be 2B’s annual Rocking Read -athon in conjunction with the Read Across America project and the birthday of Dr. Seuss. We will take turns reading, and attempt to keep a rocking chair going while we read throughout that day. Parents and Grandparents are invited to come and read in our rocking chair for a few minutes during the day and help us to keep our rocking chair going. It also demonstrates to students that reading is important and enjoyable for everyone.

In Math we have been busy learning how to do regrouping in addition and subtraction. This will be something, which we will continue to work on for the rest of the year. We are also doing some problem solving along with some graphing activities, money, and clocks. We are continuing to practice addition and subtraction facts. We are also working with fractions and will be working with  multiplication soon.

In Science we will be learning about how rainbows are made and the science behind color. We will also be learning about simple machines and how they are useful in our everyday lives. Other topics of study will be dinosaurs, and the metamorphosis of butterflies and moths.

In Social Studies we have been studying some U.S. history centering on the U. S. presidents and symbols. We have also learned about the Chinese New Year and Chinese culture. Prior to Spring Break, we will learn about the St. Patrick’s Day holiday and do some related activities. After Spring Break, we will learn about various occupations and whether they are jobs that provide goods or services. We will also be doing some map studies.

Hopefully,  we will be making a visit to the Harris Art Gallery later this spring to learn about the science behind the art of glassblowing and pottery.

This is the month of state Assessments in reading and Math for the upper grades.  Second graders  will  be taking Maps tests this spring.  The dates for testing have not yet been determined.
