Welcome to 2B.  My desire for my students is to have a very successful year in second grade.  My goal is to help my students acquire academic skills and to develop study habits which will be of great importance to them as they progress through school.

I will be working with my students, along with other adults at the elementary school, to help our students become better students and young people.

I share the responsibility of educating my students with their parents.  The parents’ attitudes toward school and their support of what goes on there can make a huge difference in the success of their children in school.

I expect my students to have a consistent homework/reading time set aside each day.  They will have an ongoing homework assignment from me to study their Spelling wordlists, Math facts and spend time reading. Students should spend 15 minutes reading, and 10 to 15 minutes for reviewing math facts and studying Spelling lists.

Students who attend C.A.T.S could do some of their homework during that time each day.

Throughout the year we will be studying various themes and topics.  Literature, Science and Social Studies activities will be incorporated into our theme studies.  Some of those themes we study are Plants, Oceans, Apples, Nutrition, Columbus, Grandparent Interviews, Fairytales, Pilgrims/ Indians, Kansas Symbols and history, Transportation history, Dinosaurs, and Butterflies.

In my classroom there are six basic rules:

Listen while the teacher and others speak.

Wait for, and follow directions.

Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Work quietly

Use the signal system to ask for help or to move about the room.

Do your best.

I use an assertive discipline plan in my classroom.  Students who break a rule will be given a warning.  The second time a rule is broken the student will move his/her car to yellow on the class traffic light. The student will then lose 5 minutes of time at the next recess.  If a rule is broken a third time his/her car will move to red on the traffic light.

I will conference with students who break the rules for five minutes at recesses so that we might correct the problem.  When a student has discipline problems three or more times in one day then parents will be notified so that together we can work to solve the problem.

Students are rewarded in various ways when they maintain good behavior throughout the week such as extra recess time etc.  The class collectively, is given the opportunity to earn rewards for good behavior in other classes than just their regular classroom, such as Music, Computer class, Library, P.E. etc.

I look forward to working with each child and his/her parents to help that student become the best person possible.   It is in the best interest of my students that the parents and I work together to provide the best school experience possible.  I will be in close contact with each parent regarding the academic and social progress of his/her child.   Together, we can make the second grade a very successful year of learning and fun for everyone.
