Chicago Resident Visits the REAL Windy City

by Tiawna C

April 16, 2009

Levar Fisher came to Elkhart on Thursday to inspire students to follow their dreams. Fisher was an outside linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals for three years before playing for the New Orleans Saints. He retired from the NFL and now travels with Sports World Ministries as an inspirational speaker. High school and middle school students filled the gym to hear Fisher speak of the many good and bad decisions he made in life and how they helped or hurt his career. He encouraged everyone to work hard in school, be careful who he or she is friends with, and always follow any dreams that he or she has. He told of the time when he was taken to jail without doing anything wrong. He was arrested simply because the friends he chose were stealing and, being associated with them, he got the blame. He also told about a bully he faced in high school. The bully told Fisher he would never be in the NFL because he was fat, slow, and weak. Fisher said he needed to thank that bully because it was the bully’s criticism that pushed him to work hard enough to prove himself as a football player. He urged everyone to prove the doubters wrong as he said, “We are not born winners, we are not born losers, but we are all born choosers.” Fisher encouraged students to work hard as he mentioned that coaches were important, but it took student leaders to really make things happen.
