EHS Key Club Earns State Awards

by Diane Brown

April 08, 2008

The Elkhart High School Key Club received state recognition at the Kansas District Key Club Convention in Wichita held on April 4-6. They were awarded a 2nd place Club Achievement trophy. Club membership, meetings, reports, dues payment, communications, induction program, convention attendance, social activities, members holding a district office, joint service projects with Kiwanis, all service projects and activities - including number of hours served and number of members who participated - and money raised for Unicef were all factors in the scoring of the state competition. Elkhart received 2nd place only to Chaparral High School who received the 1st place award.

James W., EHS Sr., Key Club Treasurer, and Gold Member, won the Outstanding Kansas Lieutenant Governor for 07-08 Award and received a plaque. This was the only award given for all 10 districts. James has served the Southwest Kansas District 10 this year and has done an excellent job of promoting Key Club and improving communications in our area.

Truide U., EHS Jr. and Bronze Member, won the 1st place medal in the Impromptu Essay contest. The topic was: “How Has Key Club Changed My Life?” According to Chuck Sack, long-time Kansas District Administrator, Truide’s essay was the best he had ever read. It was extremely well-written and very moving to those who heard it at the convention awards banquet.

Alecia S., EHS Jr. and Bronze Member, campaigned and was elected as the 08-09 District 10 Lt. Governor and will be representing Southwest Kansas during the upcoming school year. We know she will do an excellent job and are proud of her involvement.

Other students who attended the District Convention this year are: Gold Members - LeAnna R., President, Omar D., Chris L., Jonathan O., Lindsey W., Silver Members - Marcus I., Lacey J., Laura O.n, & Bronze Members - Tiawna C., Jordan S.

The sponsors for the trip were Diane Brown, EHS Key Club Faculty Advisor and Ralene Lewis, Kiwanis Youth Sponsor.
